Beginner Tai Chi

Saturdays May 10 -June 28, 2025

Class begins at 11:00 AM with instructor, Nefertiti Burton. Each class is one hour and 15 minutes. It is essential to warm up the joints before we start work on tai chi and qigong* forms. Please come on time so we can warm up together and avoid injury that may occur due to stiffness and inflexible joints.

Warmups include breath work, rotating all the major joints, coordinated movement, and gentle stretching. Make sure to let me know if you have any areas of your body that are tender or require special care. Some of the movements in tai chi and qigong forms may feel unfamiliar on your body and you will learn a lot of the basics of tai chi during warmups.

*qigong is “energy work”. Very much like tai chi, qigong exercises move energy through pathways in the body to address blockages that contribute to illness and depression.

Cost

There is no specific charge for these classes, but we encourage a donation of $5.00 – $10.00 dollars per session depending upon what you can afford. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.

What to Expect

You will get the most out of the sessions by wearing loose clothing that allows you to bend and stretch. Wear flat, flexible shoes that offer support for your ankles. If the weather is wet outside please bring shoes you can switch into because a wet floor will be dangerous for all involved. Be sure to bring a bottle of water!

We will work on the 13 Posture tai chi form and a qigong form called “The Five Elements”. If you come to all the sessions and practice during the week, by the end of June you will have made a great deal of progress in tai chi and qigong and may notice a greater sense of calmness, improved balance, and more flexibility.

There is a feedback section on this site. I hope you’ll take advantage of it to let me know how I can improve these offerings.

Looking forward to flowing with you,

Nefertiti Burton
